U.S. News & World Report ranks EU’s education, nursing programs in Top 100
More than 500 higher-education institutions are considered for the U.S. News & World Report ranking of both online graduate nursing and education programs.
Among those schools across the U.S., Edinboro University ranks in the Top 100 in each category.
U.S. News & World Report, the multi-platform publisher of authoritative rankings for higher education, granted Edinboro University the No. 35 national ranking in the 2019 Best Online Nursing Programs list and the No. 89 ranking in the 2019 Best Online Education Programs list.
This marks the fourth-consecutive year Edinboro has earned Top 100 spots in the coveted national rankings.
“We take great pride in being recognized on a national level for our outstanding faculty and quality programming at the graduate level,” said Dr. Erinn Lake, executive director of Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research. “Edinboro University’s online structure has proven to meet the needs of graduate students from all backgrounds in the region and beyond.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts nearly 1.9 million job openings for teachers of preschool through post-secondary school between 2014 and 2024. Likewise, the health-care industry is expected to add nearly 450,000 registered nurses and more than 65,000 nurse practitioners through 2026.
Beth Kotarski, who graduated in December with her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Edinboro, was searching for an affordable school with a relevant curriculum that met the schedule of her full-time job as executive director at Carnegie Mellon University Health Services.
That’s when she found Edinboro.
“Edinboro delivered all of this and more,” she said. “I cannot say enough about the professors who guided me to think more critically than I ever had in my life. They opened my eyes to career-changing approaches to my work. Most of all, they encouraged me to embrace the identity of a leader and expert in my field.”
Edinboro University offers graduate nursing programs, including Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), in consortium with Clarion University. This consortium is the only program in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to earn Top 100 rankings in the nursing sector.
In 2017, Edinboro’s DNP earned a 5-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the maximum duration for a first-time applicant. EU graduated its first cohort of DNP students in May 2017.
In 2017, the BLS ranked Pennsylvania the fifth-highest state in registered nurse employment, with RNs earning a mean annual salary of just under $70,000.
The average starting annual salary for Pennsylvania teachers ranges from $40,000 to $55,000, nearly twice the average starting salary for all occupations in the state, with experienced teachers earning upwards of $70,000 per year.
U.S. News & World Report evaluates national programs each year based on admissions selectivity, student engagement, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology.
Edinboro’s online graduate education program received the second-highest ranking of all schools in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Kutztown received the No. 77 ranking, while Clarion earned No. 154, California earned No. 169 and Indiana earned 194.

Graduate program awarded No. 23 Top School Counseling program status
Edinboro University’s graduate-level counseling program ranks among the top 32 online programs in the country, following a review from OnlineMasters.com.
The academic metrics agency validated Edinboro’s quality curriculum, flexibility of course offerings and faculty expertise by granting the counseling program the No. 23 rank among Top School Counseling schools for 2019.
“Edinboro University is proud to be recognized as among the top school counseling graduate programs,” said Dr. Erinn Lake, executive director of Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research. “Now, more than ever, our nation and the world needs competent, professional counselors who can provide services to enhance mental health and the quality of life for others.”
Further accolades were granted to Edinboro’s specialization in counseling for students with disabilities, based on Edinboro’s unique coursework. Recently, the School Counseling program earned the No. 4 rank among the 10 Best Deals in Online Master’s in School Counseling Degree Programs by the higher education website Great College Deals.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities for school and career counselors are expected to increase 13 percent over the next decade, with more than 30,000 employment opportunities predicted through 2026.
Methodology for the Top School Counseling program rankings incorporates recent data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics. Only non-profit higher-education institutions were eligible for the 2019 ranking.

BASIS program lauded for academic, social amenities for Edinboro students
“The involvement of so many people on campus has allowed the program to grow and provide diversity and inclusion across Edinboro University,” said Lisa Laird, director of OSD who has overseen an increase in BASIS participants from two in 2015 to 22 this fall at Edinboro. “The Office for Students with Disabilities is grateful for the acknowledgment of the important autism support services we offer and are thankful to the campus community for being part of the collaborative effort.”
BASIS is comprised of individualized support programs for Edinboro students, which focuses on five key areas: academics, communication, daily living skills, employment readiness and social skills. BASIS also provides social and academic peer advising, weekly sessions with transition coaches, testing and classroom accommodations, writing services and social activities.
In addition to providing resources to students, Edinboro’s OSD offers resources, such as electronic exam materials, to faculty members to help promote accessibility and inclusion in the classroom. For the past two years, BASIS has also hosted an Autism Acceptance Walk around the main campus loop to provide participants with information and facts about autism.
Edinboro is one of five Pennsylvania schools ranked among the Top 25, and the only university in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Also recognized by Best Value Schools were Eastern University (No. 20), Mercyhurst University (No. 21), Saint Joseph’s University (No. 22) and Drexel University (No. 24).
Best Value Schools began ranking national higher-education institutions as the prevalence of autism diagnoses started to grow rapidly. In 2000, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control determined that the ratio of children born with some degree of autism was 1 in 150. In 2014, that ratio increased to 1 in 59.
To address the increased task of assisting students with autism, Best Value Schools researched thousands of institutions to rank colleges and universities based on cost and program offerings. Tuition and fees for an Edinboro University student in 2017-2018 was $10,281. BASIS services are offered at an additional $2,500 per semester, with potential funding available for students to offset the cost.

U.S. News & World Report ranks EU’s education, nursing programs in Top 100
Edinboro University’s online graduate programs in education and nursing are once again among the best in the country, according to rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.
Edinboro’s graduate education program earned the No. 70 rank among 309 national institutions, while the nursing program once again earned the No. 45 ranking among 159 programs. EU earned the coveted ranking among U.S. News & World Report’s top 100 programs for the third straight year.
U.S. News & World Report evaluates national programs each year based on statistics related to admissions selectivity, student engagement, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology. Edinboro offers seven online master’s degree programs and six post-baccalaureate certificates. Graduate education programs include Master of Art in Art Education, Master of Education in Early Childhood Education, Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Education in Educational Psychology, Master of Education in Middle & Secondary Instruction, Master of Education in Reading and Master of Education in Special Education.
EU also offers certificates in arts infusion, autism spectrum disorders, Pennsylvania K-12 principal, reading specialist, superintendent and special education supervisor.

Edinboro’s online graduate education program received the highest ranking of all schools in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, the only school in the Top 100. Clarion University also received the No. 125 ranking while, Kutztown was No. 141 and California University of Pennsylvania was No. 165.

Edinboro University’s nationally recognized master’s degree program in counseling recently received further acclaim from leading higher education and career websites in the field.
The educational website Best Counseling Degrees, an online resource and ranking system that researches schools with accredited counseling programs, awarded EU the No. 16 rank among the Top 25 Most Affordable Master’s Degrees in Counseling in the Northeast.
The higher education website Great College Deals recently recognized Edinboro’s M.A. in Counseling – School Counseling as #4 in its 10 Best Deals on Online Master’s in School Counseling Degree Programs. According to the website, the rankings “reflect the presence of an intuitive online classroom environment, a richly diverse school counseling curriculum, a high percentage of faculty with Ph.Ds., course schedule flexibility, awards and ranking recognition” and other factors that add value to the online program.
Best Counseling Degrees ranked Edinboro’s Master of Arts in Counseling – College Counseling #6 in its list of Best Master’s Degrees in Student Affairs and College Counseling. This ranking of the top 30 campus-based programs in the country is based on methodology that includes affordability and accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
SR Education Group, an educational research publisher, listed EU among the 2017 Top Online Schools for Students with Disabilities, a list of higher-education institutions that provide the most comprehensive level of support and resources for students and the widest arrangement of accommodations. Additionally, Edinboro received the No. 6 ranking in the national 2017 Most Affordable Online Colleges for Students with Disabilities, which links high levels of student support with low tuition costs.
Through EU’s Office of Students with Disabilities, students have access to academic aides, assistive technology, attendant-care programs, homework and meal aides, occupational therapy and van transportation. In 2015, Edinboro implemented the Boro Autism Support Initiative for Success (BASIS), which provides support services for degree-seeking students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

EU’s Animation and Computer Animation programs ranked 22nd on the East Coast and 27th among public colleges and universities nationwide in Animation Career Review's 2017 listing of the best animation programs in the United States.
Animation Career Review also placed EU’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science – Game and Virtual World Development track 24th nationally among public schools and colleges and 20th on the East Coast in its 2016 listing of the best game design programs in the United States.
Animation Career Review’s rankings are based on academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, value and geographic location.
Edinboro University has been named one of the Best Online Colleges in Pennsylvania for 2016-2017 by Affordable Colleges Online, an organization that provides students with resources and tools related to higher education.
The list was created to help students find online colleges that rank above competitors in both academic excellence and value, utilizing key factors such as the average tuition cost, graduation rate and student-teacher ratio.
College Values Online ranked EU as No. 16 in its latest Top 30 Values list for Online Master’s in Communication.
Each program evaluated was awarded points based on tuition and special features for students. Edinboro earned points for providing in-state tuition under $10,000 and out-of-state tuition under $15,000 per academic year. Edinboro also received special recognition for offering a graduate certification in conflict management with the online Master of Arts degree.

Edinboro University’s highly-lauded online master’s degree program in early childhood education is the best in the nation, according to Top Education Degrees, an online source of information for prospective undergraduate and graduate students seeking a superior-quality education degree that aligns with their career goals.
Top Education Degrees compiled its 20 Best Online Master’s in Early Childhood Education 2017-2018 list based on tuition, relevancy of curriculum to the current demands of the profession, previous national recognitions and student-to-faculty ratio.

Victory Media, Inc., the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life and publisher of the Guide to Military Friendly Schools, named Edinboro University to its coveted “Military Friendly Schools” list for an ninth consecutive year in 2018.
According to Victory Media, the Military Friendly Schools distinction is given to colleges and universities that demonstrate positive education outcomes for veterans and their families. More than 200 companies and 1,200 post-secondary institutions receive this distinction each year, after earning top measurements in engaging prospective military students, educating military students and providing the student with meaningful employment.

The “Smart Choice” endorsement was based on data in the areas of affordability, starting salaries of recent graduates, market reputation, awards and recognition, and flexibility. Only online programs at regionally accredited colleges and universities listed in the National Center for Education Statists database were eligible for consideration.
The program also was recognized as one of the nation's best (#14) in 2016 by OnlineColleges.net.
The outcomes-based Educate To Career (ETC) College Rankings Index named Edinboro University a Top Best Value College for 2014, a designation that reflects the University’s ranking in the top one-third of more than 1,200 institutions measured by the index.
ETC, a California-based nonprofit organization, calculates the index in an effort to determine the economic value added by each college ranked. “We define economic value added as being the improvement in earnings and employability of graduates; measured against the total cost of the education,” its website states.
The index uses alumni employment data as well as calculations of the cost of an education based on tuition, number of years to graduate, and loan default rates, among other variables.
Edinboro was named #16 in the top 50 schools in the country that are best for homeschooled students by Best Value Schools. The ranking reflects EU’s close attention to student success, our unique and vibrant campus traditions, and our strong support for first-year students as they transition to college.
The ranking places the University in the company of—and ranked higher than—the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Auburn and Yale.
Edinboro University’s innovative plan for establishing Porreco College to increase educational attainment in the region and meet local demands for career and technical education received the American Association of University Administrators' (AAUA) Exemplary Models Award for 2015.
The award recognizes outstanding examples of university leadership that demonstrate creative solutions to common problems in higher education.
Since its founding in 2014, enrollment at Porreco College has exceeded targets, and a number of top regional employers have taken advantage of the college’s unique program offerings to prepare current employees for advancement and prospective employees for well-paying jobs.
Edinboro University’s tremendous service to Erie County in launching Porreco College to fill a significant void in Pennsylvania’s largest county without a community college was recognized with the Community Service Award at the 2014 Commitment to Erie Awards banquet on Sept. 17.
The Erie Times-News presents the awards annually to honor companies and nonprofit organizations for their contributions toward making the Erie region a good place to live and work.

Edinboro University’s Master of Arts in Counseling is ranked #7 in the Top 15 Online Master's in Counseling Degree Programs 2015 list compiled by Best Master’s in Psychology.
The ranking particularly highlights the EU counseling program’s unique Art Therapy concentration, which is the first completely online program of its type.
“Art therapy is revolutionizing the way we think about human services. At Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, they offer an online master’s degree in Arts Counseling that received Nonprofit Colleges Online’s ‘Students Before Profits Award’,” the article states.
The Top 15 Online Masters in Counseling Degree Programs are determined by tuition, number of students in the program relative to overall enrollment, uniqueness of the program, accreditation and reviews in the Guide to Online Schools. The ranked institutions were determined to be “the best of the best,” based on a numerical scale.
In addition, the Online Master of Education in Educational Psychology and Master of Arts in Counseling: Art Therapy are ranked #8 in the country in Nonprofit Colleges Online’s new Students Before Profits Award rankings.
The award recognizes online programs from accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities with objectively lower than average tuition cost.
