Professor Shelle Barron brings an extensive professional background to her teaching practice of over 20 years. As the first art director of Public Broadcasting of Northwest Pennsylvania, she was involved in a number of national projects for PBS including “Free to Choose and Life on Earth.” Her editorial work won honors from the National Broadcast Designers Association and PBS.
Professor Barron completed advanced studies in typology through the Visual Studies Workshop (SUNY). She maintains a design practice specializing in books, monographs and catalogues for clients including the Chicago Historical Society, the University of Pittsburgh Press and the Erie Art Museum. Her recent work has appeared in journals including “Print and Designer,” and has won gold awards in competitions sponsored by the University and College Designers Association and the American Advertising Federation.
A self-defined hybrid, Professor Barron also creates large-scale mixed media digital collage. She has won more than 20 regional and national awards for this work as well as grants from the “National Endowment for the Arts” (Mid-Atlantic) and the “Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.” She has completed residencies at Brandywine Printmaking Workshop in Philadelphia and Artists Image Resource in Pittsburgh. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections. A member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, her work was selected for a juror’s cash award at the 100th annual exhibition at the Carnegie Museum.
Maria received her M.S. degree from Gannon University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and trained EMDR therapist. She has been in private practice since 1999. Her professional interests include working with trauma, depression, anxiety and adjustment issues. She enjoys weekends with family and friends, exploring new places and is a Reiki Master.
Francis Demaske is an associate professor of Art (Graphic Design + Illustration) who has been teaching at Edinboro University since 1991. He received his MFA in Graphic Design + Illustration from Kent State University in 1992, and his BFA in Graphic Design + Illustration from Kent State University in 1989. Prior to his appointment at Edinboro University, Professor Demaske taught at Kent State University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant from 1989 to 1991. In addition, Professor Demaske received AAA and AAB from Lakeland Community College in 1984 and 1985 respectively.
Professor Demaske has been involved in the visual communication field since 1983. He was employed by the City of Euclid from 1983 to 1986 as a Designer and Illustrator. From 1986 until 1996, he was a partner in Demaske & DeWine Design, Inc., a design firm that specialized in commercial redevelopment projects and environmental graphics. He continues to contract design and illustration projects. Dr. Eperthener has been a member of the HPE department faculty since 2009 and currently serves as the advisor to the HPE Club. She is also a licensed Athletic Trainer, Performance Enhancement Specialist (NASM), and instructor for the American Red Cross. She serves as a faculty mentor for the Student Athletic Enrichment Program. Her doctoral research focused on health and safety education for youth sport coaches. She is an active member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society. Her hobbies include traveling, reading, various crafts, running, and snowshoeing.

Dr. Eperthener has also published a clinical case study in Athletic Therapy Today.
Dr. Joel Erion is a professor of school psychology in the Department of Professional Studies. He earned his doctorate in School Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to Edinboro University in 1996, Dr. Erion worked as a school psychologist in the public schools for 16 years. In 1993 he was chosen as School Psychologist of the Year by the Association of School Psychologists of Pennsylvania. In 1994 he served as president of this same organization. Dr. Erion is a nationally certified school psychologist and a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania.
Research interests include parent tutoring, response to instruction and intervention and single-case design research. Dr. Erion has presented and published on numerous occasions, frequently with student co-authors. He serves as faculty advisor to the graduate honor society, Alpha Epsilon Lambda and the School Psychology Club. Dr. Erion serves as a lead program reviewer for the National Association of School Psychologists. Working with Edinboro University management and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), he helped to have PASSHE recognize the Educational Specialist degree. In 2011 Edinboro University’s School Psychology program became the first in the state system to award the Educational Specialist degree. Dr. Erion has served as the chair of the Department of Counseling, School Psychology, and Special Education since the spring of 2013.

Originally from East Aurora, NY, Professor Karen Ernst is an associate professor in the Art Department, teaching Woodworking/Furniture Design. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from SUNY Geneseo and a Master of Fine Arts in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and has almost twenty years of woodworking and design experience. During and after her academic studies, she was employed by Spykman Design in Keene, NH, makers of custom cabinetry and fine furniture. In 2003-04 she was an artist-in-residence and summer workshop assistant at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO.
She joined the Edinboro faculty in 2004 and helped to found the Wood Furniture Club, to which she is the faculty advisor. In 2013, she received a grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation to replace and upgrade much of the equipment in the wood studio, as well as provide scholarships to students in the Wood, Metals, and Ceramics Programs at Edinboro.
She is an active member of The Furniture Society and has served as a juror for the Innovation Erie product design competition for the last six years.
The furniture and sculptural objects she designs and builds have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries across the US and are included in many private collections. Her work is featured in the Lark Books publications “500 Chairs”, “500 Tables,” and “500 Cabinets,” as well as Schiffer Publishing’s “The Maker’s Hand: Contemporary Studio Furniture.”
Dr. Meghan Ferraro is an assistant professor and the graduate program head for special education in the Department of Counseling, School Psychology, and Special Education. She is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, as well as a Pennsylvania Certified Elementary Teacher, Special Education Teacher, and School Psychologist. She has over 10 years’ experience working in the public school system as both an educator and school psychologist. She has worked with students spanning from preschool to twelfth grade with a wide range of abilities. Dr. Ferraro earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary and Special Education from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and her master’s degree in Educational Psychology, Educational Specialist’s Degree in School Psychology, and Doctoral Degree in School Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests include consultation, special education, behavioral assessments and interventions, reading instruction/intervention, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
Gerry Gendlin came to Edinboro University in 2002 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was doing research on Russia's infrastructure in the Center for International Studies. He has also taught at Tufts University, College of the Holy Cross, and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he was the first foreign full-time faculty member. Since coming to EU, he has taught 13 different courses, including American Foreign Policy, National Security, Politics of Russia, and American Politics. He maintains an active research agenda and has frequently presented papers at annual meetings and conferences, including those held by the Midwest Political Science Association, the Southwest Social Science Association, and the American Association of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Often sought by the media for comment on global affairs, he has appeared locally on WICU (Channel 12) and nationally on CBS radio. Beyond Edinboro, he has been involved with community education, serving on the board of a local early learning program and the Ready for Life Scholastic Center. His undergraduate degree is in journalism, with a minor in philosophy, from California State University, Northridge; and his master’s and doctoral degrees are from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
Dr. Hanes joined Edinboro University in 2005 after nearly 10 years in Art Education programs at state universities in Kentucky and Maine. Since arriving at EU, he has secured grants for continued study of the+ Japanese tea ceremony, collaborated in curriculum development for the program, and participated in local community arts organizations. He currently teaches in both graduate and undergraduate Art Education programs.
His doctoral degree studies at The Ohio State University included ethnographic research of dissident group art. His master’s thesis from Florida State University focused on multicultural programming in an art classroom. His professional service includes serving as a reviewer for academic journals in his field and participating as a director of a non-profit educational organization.
His research and creative interests include integrative arts and aesthetic behaviors embedded in transformative ritual practice and performance. He practices chanoyu, produces raku tea bowls, performs butoh dance, as well as plays jazz and classical trumpet. As a creative act of resistance he cultivates an organic garden. Each of these creative practices becomes a physical embodiment of a cyclical yet unpredictable process, an extension of human experience. For Dr. Hanes, the creative process of making/destroying/performing is larger than the expressive object. The aesthetic process reveals unique perspectives on life while assembling a sense of history within the ongoing-ness of human dilemma found in current issues such as corporate greed, global warming and senseless wars.
Professor Chris Lantinen has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor at the Titusville (PA) Herald and owns and operates Modern Vinyl, a music blog that has been cited in national publications such as Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly. He serves as faculty advisor to The Spectator, Edinboro University’s weekly campus newspaper, and teaches courses such as Digital Media Design and Intermediate Reporting. Professor Lantinen holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Edinboro University.
Dr. Meg Larson is an assistant professor in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and MSN for Family Nurse Practitioner programs in the Edinboro and Clarion University consortium. She holds a DNP from Robert Morris University and her BSN and MSN from Edinboro University. She also holds a Certificate in Medical Education Curriculum and Program development from the University of New England.
Dr. Larson is a primary care practitioner at a rural health clinic in northwestern Pennsylvania. She is a clinical champion for patient education and the electronic health record. She piloted telehealth programs for patients who have no access to specialized care because of geography and healthcare provider shortages. She is a frequent preceptor for nurse practitioner students from Edinboro University and Gannon University.
She has been a practicing nurse for more than 28 years and has been an Advanced Practice Nurse for 18. Her experience has covered a number of specialties including medical, surgical, immunology, orthopedic, postpartum and critical care. She now works as a nurse practitioner in family practice. Dr. Larson has received many awards in her practice including a letter of commendation from the secretary of the Veterans Administration.
Her research focused on patient and provider communication and health literacy. She published on the topic and continues to work with professional health care providers to improve patient–provider communication. Dr. Larson remains interested in health literacy, rural and telehealth and clinical collaboration to promote better care. She is an advocate for nurses and nursing education.
Dr. Susan Maloney just completed her 10th year teaching in the nursing department at Edinboro University. She has been active as the lead theory and clinical instructor in mental/behavioral health nursing courses. She enthusiastically continues to develop this course through active collaboration with the Attorney General’s office and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to include drug diversion and impaired nurse education. Additionally, a campus-wide suicide prevention/mental health first aid focus group is under collaboration with department peers and national organizations.
Since her tenure, she has been active on various departmental committees including program evaluation, in-service and publications, search and scholarship committees and student athlete advisement. She is active across campus disciplines through her university-wide appointment to the Senate Research and university-wide Curriculum sub-committee on courses committees.
Prior to her teaching assignment, she worked on campus in the Ghering Health center.
In her professional life outside of academia, she maintains active clinical roles as a board certified family nurse practitioner for the last 17 years in various healthcare settings, and also works privately as a health psychologist addressing women’s health, fitness, depression and body image issues.
Her civic and cultural volunteer service work includes being an active board and health advisory member to Crawford County Mental Health Awareness Program (CHAPS) in Meadville where she offers nutrition, health and recovery education to consumers. She is a member of St. Mary’s Parish and the local Meadville YMCA.
In her free time she enjoys working out as a gluten-free athlete and mom to Annie.
Gery T. Nietupski, Esq., is an honors graduate of both John Carroll University and the Duquesne University School of Law. At Duquesne, Professor Nietupski received the Law School’s highest honor, the “Distinguished Student” award. Professor Nietupski has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate school classes at both Gannon University and Edinboro University for nearly 30 years and is a frequent, and sought after lecturer for several professional employment organizations, including the Manufacturer and Business Association of Northwest Pennsylvania.
Professor Nietupski focuses his extensive practice in representing Employers’ and employees in their workplace relationships. He has negotiated approximately 80 labor contracts for management, has weathered nine strikes, and has litigated hundreds of cases before State and Federal courts, as well as the NLRB, the EEOC, OSHA, wage and hour and the PHRC.
On the personal side, Attorney Nietupski is a professional scuba instructor, avid ultra-marathoner, weightlifter, golfer and family man.
Mary Paniccia Carden received her doctorate from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She taught at SUNY Binghamton and Southeastern Oklahoma State University before joining the Edinboro faculty in 2002. She teaches courses ranging from composition to literature survey courses to advanced seminars for majors. She is currently chairperson of the department of English and Philosophy.
Dr. Carden’s research interests are varied. She is the author of Sons and Daughters of Self-Made Men: Improvising Gender, Place, Nation in American Literature (Bucknell UP 2010) and co-editor of Doubled Plots: Romance and History (U of Mississippi Press 203). Dr. Carden has published articles on authors including William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Jane Smiley, Alice McDermott, and Jack Kerouac in scholarly journals such as Twentieth Century Literature, Modern Fiction Studies, Contemporary Literature, and African-American Review.
She specializes in modern and contemporary American literature, autobiography, and literature by women. Dr. Carden is currently at work on a manuscript addressing the autobiographical practices of Beat-associated women writers. In 2010, she was named Edinboro University’s Scholar of the Year.
Dr. Laurie Parendes joined the EU faculty in 1999 after completing her PhD in geography at Oregon State University. Prior to being a professor, she studied cypress swamps in Florida, served as Women in Development Coordinator for Peace Corps/Nepal, worked for California Department of Fish and Game’s Endangered Plant Program, and edited scientific manuscripts for the College of Forestry at Oregon State University.
As a geographer, she is intrigued by the relationship between humans and the environment, and both her teaching and research reflect this interest. She teaches introductory courses on environmental issues and conservation of natural resources, including special sections for honors and First Year Experience students. She also teaches advanced courses on biogeography, geography of water resources, and a seminar in geography (most recently on the timely topic of invasive species).
Her PhD research on invasive plants in Oregon was followed by a study of zebra mussel invasion in Edinboro Lake, which she has been monitoring since 2001 when they were first discovered locally. Pennsylvania SeaGrant provided the initial funding, and many undergraduate students have worked on this project, either as volunteers, independent study students, or part of a class project.
She contributes time and energy in a variety of arenas on campus and in the wider community, including peer reviews of grant proposals, recruitment events for prospective students, honorary captain for women’s athletic events, and workshops for local environmental groups. She belongs to several professional and conservation organizations, including Association of American Geographers and French Creek Valley Conservancy.
James Parlin is a professor of Sculpture and Three-Dimensional Design, and currently serves as Chairperson of the Art Department. His undergraduate degree is in religious thought from the University of Pennsylvania, and his graduate degree is in Sculpture, also from Penn. He is an active artist and shows his work regularly in a variety of national and regional venues. He is represented by the Schmidt Dean Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. Parlin has a long record of service with APSCUF, the professors’ union, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Erie Art Museum, Erie, PA.
Dr. Ron Raymond has more than 30 years of experience in the radio industry, working on air and as a manager for stations in Florida and Pennsylvania, most recently as general manager of WCTL-FM, Erie’s Contemporary Christian station. He serves as faculty advisor to WFSE-FM, Edinboro University’s campus station, and as business manager for all three of the university’s campus media organizations. His primary teaching responsibilities include Audio Production and Beginning Reporting, as well as courses in announcing and station management, sales and promotion. Dr. Raymond holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Edinboro University and a doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He also serves as the department's internship director and undergraduate program coordinator.
Dr. Reagan has been a member of the Health and Physical Education Department faculty since May 2000. From 1989 to 1999 he served in the capacity of Coordinator of Recreation and Athletic Study within the Department of Student Affairs. He currently serves as Program Director for Sport and Recreation Administration. Dr. Reagan is also currently serving as the advisor to the Sport and Recreation Club. He has previously served as department assistant chairperson, director of the HPE Junior Field Experience program, board chair of the local YMCA, and a member of the Greater Erie Metro YMCA board. He is an avid fitness enthusiast and golfer. He is a husband and father of four children.

Guitarist Kahlil Sarikey has been a featured performer throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Sarikey joined the Music Department faculty at Edinboro University as the guitar instructor. He also holds a position at Buffalo State College as instructor of guitar ensemble.
Kahlil Sarikey is currently a doctoral candidate at the Eastman School of Music, where he was awarded a teaching assistantship. His educational credits also include a bachelor of arts from Buffalo State College, and a Master’s of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. Sarikey has participated in master classes with world-renowned artists such as Roland Dyens, Roberto Aussell, Eliot Fisk, Ricardo Cobo, Marcin Dylla, and David Tanenbaum.
Mr. Sarikey has performed in several competitions taking first prize in the Eastman Guitar Concerto competition (2012) and second prize in the Great Lakes Guitar Society competition (2014).

Mr. Schaffer earned his master’s degree in Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Social Work in 1991; Bachelor of Social Work from Slippery Rock University in 1989; and Liberal Arts Degree from Penn State University in 1986.
Mr. Schaffer has been an Adjunct in Edinboro University’s Social Work Department since 2012. He was an Adjunct at Thiel College, Department of Sociology, Greenville, Pa., for 5 years; and also taught at California University of Pa., School of Social Work and the University of Cincinnati, School of Social Work. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work and a Certified Forensic Social Worker.
Mr. Schaffer has presented at numerous national and international conferences, seminars, workshops and published 3 book chapters and over 20 articles, all on military veterans in the areas of: 1) Forensic, 2) Homelessness, 3) Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), 4) Sexual Offenders and 5) Fatherhood. He retired as the Coordinator, Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO), Liaison, Veterans Treatment Court (VTC), VA Medical Center, and Butler, Pa. He is an honorably discharged U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, 1976-82.
Mr. Schaffer is a father of 19 year old triplets; 2 boys and a girl. His sons are Navy and Army reserves and his daughter attends EU. He is an active community and non-profit volunteer. He is an avid weight lifter and has practiced Judo, Tae Kwon Do and most recently Hapkido.
Professor Michelle Vitali arrived at Edinboro University in 1999 after teaching at Pratt Institute, Parson's School of Design and the New York Academy of Art. She is originally from Philadelphia, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts before moving to New York for her Master of Fine Arts from the New York Academy's Graduate School of Figurative Art. She also studied abroad at Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy.
While her degrees are in painting, Professor Vitali has done extensive work in drawing and sculpture. Her work also spans some of the sciences. She is a medical/scientific illustrator and a forensic artist. As a painter and illustrator, she has exhibited her work extensively, both nationally and internationally. Her illustrations have appeared in many publications and several books. As a forensic artist, Professor Vitali has worked on high-profile criminal cases in the United States, and performed facial reconstructions on historical cases in the U.S. and in Spain.
Professor Vitali's research areas include improving the efficacy of 2D and 3D reconstruction, researching best practices for all forensic arts, and experimenting in materials and processes in the arts. Her work has been recognized by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and numerous law enforcement agencies.
At Edinboro University, Professor Vitali has initiated several new courses and two programs: an illustration concentration within the art department, and the Institute of Forensic Sciences for which she currently serves as a Fellow.
Dr. Kristin Webber joined the faculty at Edinboro University in 2012 after serving 18 years as a K-12 classroom teacher. Since coming to Edinboro University, she has assumed the position of program head for the Graduate Reading Program where she oversees the Reading Specialist program and coordinates the Reading Clinical held every summer. She teaches undergraduate courses in the Early Childhood program as well as graduate courses in the Reading program.
Dr. Webber keeps an active scholarly agenda. She regularly presents at state and national conferences including the International Literacy Association’s Annual Convention. Her articles have appeared in publications such as Educational Leadership, Ohio Journal for English Language Arts, and the Ohio Reading Teacher. She is a contributing author for the Technology in Literacy Education blog that appears in Reading Online Today (www.reading.org) and serves as an associate editor for the Ohio Reading Teacher.
With her husband and their two teenage children, family activities are an important part of her life. In addition to being a dance mom and a soccer mom, she is an officer of the Badger Athletic Boosters, the Badger Cheerleading Boosters, and the Joseph Badger Soccer Organization.
