I have wanted to become an elementary teacher for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I had educators who made a significant and positive difference in my life. These wonderful experiences encouraged me to pursue a career in education and I knew that Edinboro University was the best place for me to successfully accomplish this dream.
Recently after graduation in May 2018, I was hired as a contracted learning support teacher for North Hills School District in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. I am grateful for the countless opportunities Edinboro provided me, from clubs and organizations to individual meetings with my advisor and the career center. I felt that the faculty and staff at our great university went out of their way to assist me in reaching my goals, and because of Edinboro University I feel prepared to begin my first year as Miss. Porter.
I chose to participate in a STEM program at Edinboro University because, courtesy of my undergraduate classes and field experiences, I have learned the importance and emphasis of STEM in early childhood education. I was eager to learn how to incorporate STEM across the curriculum and develop engaging, hands-on STEM opportunities for my students.
My advice to individuals exploring a career path or degree in STEM is to research all of the different opportunities available and once you find something that sparks your interest or passion, then go for it. STEM is broad and there is something for everyone, what ties it all together is the focus on creating new knowledge, solving problems, and learning about the world around us.
