Federal Direct Plus Loans

Parents of dependent undergraduate and graduate students can obtain a Federal Direct PLUS Loan to help pay education expenses.

Current loan interest rate can be found at studentaid.gov, and accrue interest at all times, even when the student is in school.

The maximum loan amount is the student's cost of attendance (determined by the school) minus any other financial aid received.

The borrower must not have an adverse credit history. Should the parent be denied the loan, the parent could indicate at the end of the application that an appeal will not be pursued. The student can be eligible for up to an additional $4,000 to $5,000 a year in loans based on the number of earned credits. If this decision is made at a later time, the parent should print a hard copy of the denial, add a statement that an appeal or an endorser will not be pursued and to maximize the student's unsubsidized loan monies. Return this document to the Financial Aid Office.
