          Edinboro University hosts training with regional education leaders



          Two former Pennsylvania Department of Education secretaries to facilitate training

          Edinboro University and Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit are collaborating to host a training for area school leaders provided though the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL).

          More than 50 educational leaders – including principals and superintendents in Erie and Crawford counties – from several school districts in western Pennsylvania will be attending to continue training for continuing-education and Act 45 requirements.

          Co-facilitating the training, which will be held 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and again on April 14-15, are two former Pennsylvania Secretaries of Education: Francis Barnes, resident master facilitator for NISL, and Amy Morton, NISL Pennsylvania coordinator. School districts and educational programs attending this week include Erie’s Public Schools, General McLane, Girard, Wattsburg, Warren County, Union City, Crawford Central, the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit #5 and Edinboro University.

          Edinboro University has a long history of preparing principals and superintendents for their initial credentials through the nationally recognized educational leadership programs.

          “Hosting this high-caliber training for regional educational leaders reflects the dedication that Edinboro University and the Intermediate Unit has to providing world class programs and facilitators for school systems in western Pennsylvania,” said Dr. Andy Pushchak, head of Edinboro University’s Educational Leadership program.

          The graduate level course being delivered is called System Design Benchmarking (SDB). This training provides superintendents and their district leadership teams a shared understanding of what makes top-performing systems successful—how they are structured, designed and function.

          The SDB lays groundwork that will enable district leadership teams to redesign their district as a cohesive education system in which each component supports and enhances the other. Equally important, it creates a shared learning environment for the district’s administrators that builds urgency and creates a common vision and language to undertake the work necessary to dramatically improve student performance at scale. Each facilitation is tailored so that the experience is specifically relevant to each district’s unique context.
