Edinboro earns national acclaim for excellence in teacher preparation

Edinboro University’s School of Education recently gained prestigious recognition and accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP), the only nationally recognized accrediting body for educator preparation programs in the U.S.

Edinboro becomes one of three higher-education institutions in Pennsylvania to hold the coveted CAEP accreditation and the first to earn both initial and advanced preparation status.

“Accreditation assures students and families that they are receiving the appropriate knowledge and skills for the discipline and that the program is academically and financially sound,” said Dr. Erinn Lake, dean of the School of Education. “It is also an assurance that an academic program has adequate facilities, course requirements and educational standards that will benefit both the student and future employers.”

Accreditation is a nongovernmental activity based on peer review that serves the dual functions of assuring quality and promoting improvement.

Institutions seeking accreditation must pass peer review on five standards, which are based on evidence that graduates are competent and caring educators and that faculty and staff have the capacity to create a culture of evidence and use it to maintain and enhance the quality of the professional programs they offer.

“These institutions meet high standards so that their students receive an education that prepares them to succeed in a diverse range of classrooms after they graduate,” said Dr. Christopher A. Koch, president of CAEP.

CAEP was created by the consolidation of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. Edinboro University’s School of Education has been accredited by NCATE since 2014.

“Everyone in the School of Education works hard and is committed to helping students prepare for their future work in our nation’s P-12 schools,” said Kristina Bodamer, director of accreditation and program improvement for Edinboro’s School of Education. “It is wonderful to see that CAEP recognizes the great work of our amazing instructors and students.”

The 7-year CAEP accreditation, which includes Edinboro University’s initial and advanced educator preparation programs, is the latest recognition to highlight the strength of EU’s School of Education. Edinboro’s teacher education programs are also accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Program and the National Association of School Psychologists.

“This validation is an important distinction that our students and their families are investing in a solid education program that continues to be nationally accredited,” Bodamer said.

Because of the rigorous standards for certification, recruiters from all over the country come to Pennsylvania looking for teachers, putting Edinboro education graduates at the top of the list as schools look to fill teaching positions.

          Edinboro’s CAEP-accredited programs include:
