Edinboro celebrates academic success of more than 600 in Class of 2020

Edinboro University celebrated the academic success of 626 students in the Class of 2020, following a semester of transition from in-class to online modalities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edinboro wrapped an unprecedented semester by conferring bachelor’s and associate degrees upon 490 undergraduates and master’s degrees and post-graduate certificates upon 136.

“These hard times have served as a defining moment. The uncertainties and difficulties that began in March will no doubt have an impact for years to come,” said Dr. Huang in an email to the student body.

“But these weeks and months have also provided an opportunity to demonstrate what defines us as a campus community. The resilience, persistence and grit that are at the core of who we are have sustained us, allowing us to be there for our students and each other.”

During the spring semester, Edinboro University’s administration surveyed both undergraduate and graduate members of the Class of 2020 regarding the spring commencement ceremony. Nearly 76% of the 547 respondents indicated that an in-person ceremony is preferred. Edinboro has decided to postpone the ceremony until the fall, given the changing nature of COVID-19.

Despite the delay, diplomas and graduation tassels were distributed to students this month.

“When Commencement day comes, it will have very special meaning for all of us,” Dr. Huang wrote in the email. “The entire campus community will share your pride as you receive well-earned recognition for your hard work and perseverance.”

At the conclusion of the spring 2020 semester, Edinboro also recognized four individuals for their service to the campus community

Dr. Victoria Hedderick, professor in Edinboro University’s Nursing Department, was recognized as the 2020 Faculty Member of the Year. The annual award honors a tenured professor who demonstrates outstanding excellence in teaching.

Dr. Wayne Hawley, associate professor in the Psychology Department, was recently recognized as Edinboro University’s 2020 Scholar of the Year. The annual award honors a tenured professor who demonstrates outstanding excellence in scholarly research.

Dr. Peter McLaughlin, professor in the Psychology Department, recently was named Edinboro University’s 2020 Advisor of the Year. McLaughlin was recognized for his advising skills and prolific contributions to campus programs, events and committees.

Jim Dahle, director of Safety and Risk Management, was named the 2020 Staff Member of the Year. His vigilant, ongoing work to enhance Edinboro’s safety programs and procedures was integral to the swift and decisive response to COVID-19.

A date for the postponed spring 2020 Commencement Ceremony will be announced at a later date.
