The National Science Foundation has awarded PennWest Edinboro a $1.2 million grant
to fund STEM majors to become teachers in high-need school districts. From this, the
Edinboro Noyce Teacher Scholar (ENTS) program was formed to recruit students majoring
in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics who are also interested in a teaching
career. Those already with a STEM degree are also encouraged to become an ENTS.
STEM majors can receive two one-year scholarships for their senior and fifth (teaching certification) years at $17,150 per year of the scholarship. Recent graduates can apply for a one-year $30,000 stipend to obtain their post-baccalaureate teaching certification.
After completion of the program, students will be required to be employed in a high-need school district for two years for every year of scholarship or stipend received.
The Noyce award provides new and unique opportunities for Scholars, such as a yearlong capstone experience in a high-need school district, practice of culturally responsive strategies, behavior modification and innovative teaching strategies, urban and rural education experiences, and early employment training through student employment options. Before applying for the ENTS scholarship/stipend, please review the expectations of the ENTS program.
Candidacy requirements include the following: 3.0 GPA after completing 45 credits, passing the Pennsylvania Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA) for reading, writing, and mathematics, passing 46 credits of content specific courses with a C or higher, appropriate clearances, and having an advisor certify that the candidate has a positive professional disposition. Candidates already with a STEM degree will have a modified path to completion.
