Students who fail to meet Satisfactory Academic Progressstandards after the Spring 2022 semester grades have been posted may delay the processing
of your request or result in the cancellation of any estimated aid.
Review available aid programs below for any additional aid-specific requirements.
Enrollment
The University defines full-time enrollment for the Summer as 12 credits for undergraduate
students and 9 credits for graduate students for the entire Summer session.
To be eligible for a Summer Federal Direct Loan, you must maintain an enrollment status
of at least a half-time basis of CPOS credits (or more) throughout the Summer session. Therefore,
students enrolled in half of the above hours (Undergraduate=6 / Graduate=4.5) will
be considered for a loan, assuming all other eligibility requirements are met. Summer
sessions can be combined to meet the minimum requirements.
Graduate students taking all undergraduate classes will be treated as undergraduate
students and must be in at least 6 credits.
Available Aid Programs
Receiving Summer aid could have an impact on the amount of aid you are eligible to
receive in the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Semesters.
Federal Pell Grant
Available to undergraduate students based on enrollment and financial need.
If you are eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant, it will automatically be awarded
to you. The award will be prorated based on the shorter summer period.
Receiving a Pell Grant in Summer 2022 will not affect your Pell Grant awards for Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 unless you are getting close
to your aggregate grant limit.
If your enrollment changes, your award will be adjusted accordingly.
PA State Grant
Available to undergraduate students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree based on enrollment and financial need.
You must be enrolled in at least 6 credits over a period of 5 weeks or more.
You must have made Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by PHEAA during Fall
2021 & Spring 2022.
Complete the Summer Grant Application to apply. The application is available online only from March 15 to August 15, 2022
by logging into your PA State Grant account at pheaa.org. If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one.
Students may receive a maximum of 8 full-time disbursements. Any grant money received
for the summer semester will count toward the 8 full-time disbursements.
The PA State Grant is awarded late. If you are awarded a PA State Grant for Summer, you will receive a refund in August
if your charges were previously paid in full.
Federal Direct Loans
Available to students based on enrollment and financial need.
Must file a FAFSA before a Direct Loan can be processed.
Must maintain enrollment in at least 6 CPOS credits throughout the Summer. Sessions
can be combined to meet the overall requirement.
Students who have never borrowed through the Federal Direct Loan Program must complete
the Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling before the loan can be applied
to your bill. The MPN and Entrance Counseling can be completed online at https://studentaid.gov/.
If you borrow federal loans during the summer, that amount will be deducted from the
amount you normally receive in the fall & spring semesters.
You will not receive additional loan money; simply, your yearly loan amount will be equally divided between the three semesters
(Summer/Fall/Spring). Summer is the beginning of the 2022-2023 Academic Year. For
example, if your maximum eligibility is $3,500 for the year, your loan will be divided
equally among the 3 semesters (Summer, Fall, and Spring), awarding approximately $1,167
each semester.
The maximum loan amount will be awarded. If you do not want to borrow the maximum
amount, notify the Financial Aid Office at finaid-edn@pennwest.edu.
The total loan amount will not exceed the student’s annual grade level eligibility.
Grade level eligibility is determined by the total number of credits the student has
EARNED.
If you are enrolled less than half-time or choose not to borrow federal loans, you
can apply for a private loan (see below).
Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans/Graduate PLUS Loans
Available to parents ofdependentundergraduate students or to Graduate students seeking a Graduate level degree based on enrollment and financial need.
Must file a FAFSA before a PLUS loan can be processed.
CAN APPLY AFTER APRIL 15, 2022.
You must complete a separate loan application specifically for Summer only using the loan term of 5/2022-8/2022.
Complete the PLUS loan application and PLUS loan MPN (Master Promissory Note) online
at: https://studentaid.gov/.
Private Loan Programs
Available to students who have no remaining federal aid eligibility or choose not
to utilize federal loans.
Can be used to cover Summer costs without taking away from the state and federal aid
available during Fall and Spring semesters.
Eligibility is determined by each individual lender based on credit worthiness and
may require a co-signer.
You must complete a separate loan application through your lender specifically for
Summer only, using the loan term of 5/2022-8/2022.
The Financial Aid Office will automatically process aid for Summer once the student
has met all the criteria under the Application Process section of this page.
An e-mail will be sent to the university e-mail account when aid has been processed,
directing the student to view their awards online. Students are advised to review
the total amount of aid packaged for the entire 2022-2023 Academic Year. If additional
funds are needed, students are encouraged to contact their Financial Aid Counselor to discuss additional options.
Cost of Attendance
The cost will simply be a prorated version of the prior academic year costs but will
incorporate Summer tuition charges rather than those for Fall/Spring. All other costs
will be prorated based on the shorter duration of enrollment.
Aid will be received
Receiving Summer aid could have an impact on the amount of aid you are eligible to
receive in the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Semesters.
Your aid may be applied to your bill as a credit but the funds will not actually pay to your account until your scheduled disbursement date based on your enrollment status.
Students must notify the Financial Aid Office if your enrollment changes after aid
is initially awarded. Failure to do so will delay the disbursement of financial aid.
If your aid is approved after your bill is paid by other means, you will receive a
refund (assuming you meet all eligibility requirements).
If you expect to receive a refund, sign up for direct deposit online or verify your
mailing address is on file with the Student Accounts Office. For questions about direct
deposit, contact the Student Accounts Office.
If you receive an early refund from your financial aid and then become enrolled in
later sessions, you are responsible to pay any balance due when billed for the later
session(s) or you can apply for an additional loan.
